Retayne 4oz

Retayne is a dye fixative that helps prevent commercially dyed fabrics from bleeding and fading. Apply it once before washing your fabric for the first time, or before piecing it into your quilt, for long-lasting colour retention. Available in washing machine and hand wash methods.

Note: New energy-efficient front and top-loading washing machines do not supply enough water for the machine method. Use the hand wash method or a traditional top-loader at your local laundromat.

When to Use Retayne

Test your fabric first:

1. Dampen a small square of 100% cotton white muslin.
2. Place it on top of the coloured fabric to be tested.
3. Iron with a hot iron until dry.
4. If any colour transfers to the muslin, treat your fabric with Retayne.

How to Use Retayne

Washing Machine Method:

1. Fill your washing machine to cover the fabric with 140°F (60°C) water. Boil water on the stove and add if needed.
2. Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of Retayne per yard of fabric.
3. Add dry cotton fabric. Run a 20-minute wash cycle — reset the machine if needed so the bath doesn’t drain early. Rinse with cold water and dry immediately.

Hand Wash Method:

1. Heat water to 140°F (60°C) in an old enamel canning kettle (not used for food). Use enough water for the fabric to move freely.
2. Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of Retayne per yard of fabric.
3. Add dry fabric and swish for 20 minutes with a spoon or wooden dowel. Rinse with cold water and dry immediately.

Care After Treatment

You only need to treat fabric once. Launder treated fabric in warm water with a cold rinse. Do not wash in hot water.
